Snipora vs macOS Text Replacements

Every Mac has a text expander already: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Replacements. For short, plain phrases, it may be all you need.

By Anmol Sethi · Checked

Quick answer

Text Replacements are free, built in, and sync to your iPhone and iPad. They’re plain text only, with no dates, forms or rules, and many apps outside Apple’s own text system ignore them. Snipora works in every app, adds dates, forms and rules, and brings your replacements over on first launch.

Where Snipora pulls ahead

  • It works everywhere you type, including apps that ignore Text Replacements, such as many Electron apps and terminals.
  • Snippets that change: today’s date, the clipboard, a blank to fill in.
  • Esc undoes an expansion you didn’t want.
  • Suggestions for the phrases you haven’t saved yet.

Where Text Replacements are enough

  • Your snippets are a handful of short, plain phrases.
  • You want the same ones on your iPhone, and nothing to install.

Moving your replacements

  1. Open Snipora. On first launch it reads your Text Replacements and offers Bring them over.
  2. Shortcuts get a ; in front if they don’t start with a symbol, so they never fire inside words.
  3. Keep the originals if you want them on your iPhone. On the Mac they keep expanding under their old shortcuts, so delete the ones you’ve replaced.

Snipora is free for up to 15 snippets, suggestions included. Unlimited is $2.99 a month, $24.99 a year, or a lifetime licence: $29.99 for the first 50 buyers (25% off), then $39.99.

Questions people ask

Will both expand the same shortcut?
No: once imported, Snipora’s copy has a ; in front, so the two never share a shortcut.

Snipora is free for up to 15 snippets. No account.
