Setup

Set up Snipora

About two minutes from download to your first expansion. Here’s each step, and the settings worth changing.

Install

  1. Download Snipora and open the disk image.
  2. Drag Snipora onto the Applications folder.
  3. Open it from Applications or Spotlight. It lives in the menu bar; there’s no Dock icon.

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple silicon & Intel. No account, no sign-up.

Allow typing access

Snipora needs two switches in System Settings → Privacy & Security: Accessibility (to replace the abbreviation) and Input Monitoring (to notice it). Click Allow typing access… in the menu bar and macOS opens the right page.

What you type is matched in memory against your abbreviations and never leaves your Mac. If the suggestions feature is on, it counts the last few words, in memory only; turn it off in the menu any time.

Your first snippets

  • On first launch, allow Contacts and Snipora makes ;name, ;email, ;phone and ;addr from your own card.
  • If another expander is installed, Bring your snippets over imports its snippets.
  • Select text in any app and press ⌃⌥S to save it as a snippet.
  • Or open Edit snippets and click New snippet.

The browser extension

Snippets already work in every browser. The extension is only for snippets set to “Only in…” or “Everywhere except…” a website: it tells Snipora the site’s name (never the full address).

  • Safari: Safari → Settings → Extensions, tick Snipora, and allow it on all websites.
  • Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi: in Snipora’s Settings click Set up… next to Browser extension, then add the extension.

The snippets command

In Snipora’s Settings click Copy install command next to Command line, and paste it into Terminal:

sudo ln -sf /Applications/Snipora.app/Contents/MacOS/Snipora /usr/local/bin/snippets
snippets list # every abbreviation and its first line
snippets expand ';sig' # print what it expands to
snippets add ';ty' 'Thank you!' # add a snippet

Shortcuts has Expand Snippet, Add Snippet and List Snippets actions too, and they show in Spotlight.

Add your licence

  1. Your licence key arrives by email right after you buy.
  2. Click Go unlimited in the menu bar (or in Snipora’s window), paste the key and click Activate.
  3. To move it to another Mac, click Deactivate there first. A 3 or 5 Mac licence works on that many Macs at once.

Without a licence Snipora is free for up to 15 snippets. If a Pro subscription ends, every snippet keeps working; you just can’t add more than 15.

Uninstall

  1. Export your snippets first if you want to keep them (Settings → Export…).
  2. Quit Snipora from the menu bar and drag it to the Trash.
  3. If you installed the command: sudo rm /usr/local/bin/snippets
  4. To remove your snippets too: delete ~/Library/Application Support/Snipora.

Snipora is free for up to 15 snippets. No account.
